When properly specked to your needs the Firefly heat pump is one of the very few in the industry that will heat to 40 degrees Celsius. On average the Firefly range uses R1.00 of electrical input to produce R5.00 worth of heating. With regular services the heat pump can last 15 years comfortably

Description

A heat pump, that is used to heat up a spa or swimming pool, can save you money because it uses heat energy from a renewable source. In the long run this will save you thousands in your monthly utility bill and you can be sure that you have a fully heated pool to swim in all year round.
What separates us is that our heat pumps go up to 40 degrees Celsius. Rain, hail, wind, shine or mist, it is designed to work in all weather conditions. You don’t need to worry about your pool cooling down in overcast miserable weather. Our heat pumps still perform at -10 degrees Celsius whereas most heat pumps shut down at six degrees Celsius.

Let’s look at some maths on how our heat pumps saves you money

A 200 litre geyser has a 4KW element. A bath or shower in the morning for a family takes up about 30 minutes of use (drains the geyser) lets assume that the recovery time is 1.5 hours. The same in the evening. This gives us a total of 4 hrs per day

A geyser has a heat loss of 3.6 hours per day on average. Lets round this down to 3 hours. This gives us a total of 7 hours usage per day. Multiply this by the 4KW and by 30 days gives us a total of 840 KWhrs.

In most cases if the variable (number of hours) is correct the kilowatt hours should be between 60-80% of the total usage in a household (the average household). 840 x R1.47 = R1 234.80 (residential incl. VAT)
A FFD-5.4 has a power input of 1.28 KW and an output of 5.4 KW (or kilojoules)

We use the same maths keeping the variable the same
1.28 x 7hrs x 30 days = 268.80 KWhrs     68.80 KWhrs x R1.47 = R395.14

That’s a savings of 571.20 KWhrs or the equivalent of 571KG of CO2 – The rand value savings is R839.66

Heat Pump FAQ's

Q: How does a heat pump work?

A: A heat pump works like an air conditioning unit in reverse. It extracts heat from the ambient air surrounding it, enabling it to heat the refrigerant which is then compressed causing it to get even hotter. This is then run through a heat exchanger in which the water is heated.

Q: What are the expected savings?

A: Savings will depend on the average ambient temperature where the heat pump is installed. If you look at the average temperature in SA of 22 degrees, a heat pump will use 1KW of energy to produce 4KJ of heating energy. This equates to savings up to 75% of your hot water generation costs.

Q: How long does it take to heat the water up?

A: The size of the heat pump installed and the ambient temperature plays a big part, however in ideal conditions it will heat up quicker than a typical element based geyser.

Q: How long does it take to install?

A: +- 4-5 hours on a standard installation with an existing geyser for a domestic Heat Pump. A commercial is totally dependent on the site and the piping configuration required.

Q: What is the maximum temperature?
A: 55 degrees is factory recommended.

Q: How often does it need to be maintained?

A: In most cases a service is needed annually, however if you are in an area with bad water, dirty or polluted air this can be as much as a quarterly service.

Q: Can it be used with an existing element in the geyser?
A: Yes.

Q: Heat pump vs Solar Hot Water.

A: Heat pumps work at any time of the day, a solar hot water system will only work 4-5 hours a day, after which the element needs to start working. 95% of hot water is used when the sun is not shining.

Tests done by Eskom showed solar thermal saved on average 26% of hot water generation costs and a heat pump 67%.

Solar Thermal is excellent when considering an off – grid solar PV solution, however the capacity of the hot water tank needs to be taken into account.

Q: What is the life span of a heat pump?
A: +- 15 years. If looked after properly.

The total cost was around R137 799. After a few month, we noticed our electricity bill dropped to R20 276 - a huge saving of R11 209 pm. The amazing fact was it was just a simple change of light bulbs - that's all! This translates, that in one year we would cover up te cost of installation in savings. Firefly's service was excellent throughout and very helpful, making sure they got us this incredible saving. I would definitely recommend Firefly.

During the course of 2011 /2012 we installed Firefly Heat Pumps as a means to manage our energy costs at our ABH Children’s Home and the ABH Dayanand Gardens Home for the Aged.  We are pleased to report that we were able to recoup the expenses for the purchase and installation of the heat pumps within the first year of its operation.  We also found that the heat pumps have been able to provide our water heating needs adequately to the point where we do not use the conventional electrical heating elements. The pumps are robust with very little down time – provided that they are serviced as prescribed by the manufacturers.

We would like to thank you for your guidance and support regarding our upgrade from standard 5 foot florescent tubes to your 5 foot 4000K LED fluorescent tubes.
Our growing rooms are set up with 22 lights per room, which included standard 5 foot fluorescents tubes, electronic ballasts, magnetic ballasts and starters. The running cost was roughly R450 per 8 hour day. After the ballasts and old tubes were removed the new cost was R80 per 8 hour day. Which is an 82o/o saving. With a total of 252 tubes swapped out this will definitely make a significant cost saving. We also found that the older magnetic ballasts got incredibly hot and melted the plastic fittings that they were in. Thus the removal of those ballasts most probably has prevented a potential fire hazard! Once again we would like to thank you all for your help and your friendly and prompt service.
